Plastic Free Friday

plastic free fridaysPlastic free Fridays, an environmental movement similar to Meatless Mondays, encourages people to live plastic free for one day a week. While it’s probably not feasible to get rid of any and all plastic in your home for a day, it is totally doable to eliminate plastic “consumables” for a day.

Here are a few things to consider if you are going to try this, who knows, maybe something will become part of your daily routine.

Beverages  Say no to plastic lids and straws

  • Say NO to plastic lids, straws and those silly plastic stoppers that Starbucks adds to their cups.  Take a reusable BPA free cup if you must have your coffee to go.
  •  Wean yourself from buying the case of water bottled in plastic.  I know it’s convenient and cheap but it’s BAD!!!  Consider a home filtration system or water delivery service like Culligan.
  • Thirsty?  Choose aluminum over plastic.

Food

  • Say NO to plastic utensils.  Consider buying a bamboo travel utensil set or throw a fork in your purse and call it good.
  • Say NO to plastic and styrofoam to go containers.  Black plastic is the hardest plastic to recycle and almost always ends up in a landfill or the ocean.
  • Say NO to prepackaged food, this one comes with a lot more benefits than just environmental!

  • We all know we should use reusable bags but statistics show that not everyone’s on board with this.  Here’s a tip, carry around a small reusable bag in your purse to avoid being caught in the checkout line unprepared.
  • When grocery shopping, take along a basket to avoid the plastic produce bags.  While it takes a few seconds longer during checkout, the basket protect the produce far better than several plastic bags.
  • Take along glass containers when shopping in the bulk section.  It takes just a minute to weigh / label your glass jar before filling.

Home

  • Consider buying/using a bamboo toothbrush
  • Check out alternatives to plastic wrap for food storage.  There’s many DIY recipes to make your own, which I tried and was unhappy with the outcome.  Check out purchasing from a reputable manufacturer like Bee’s Wrap.
  • Consider homemade alternatives to cleaning products, nontoxic and you can store in a glass bottle.  My favorite cleaning solution for my kitchen is orange vinegar.  To make, add the peel from three oranges to white vinegar for two days, store in a large glass jar in the fridge.  After the liquid has absorbed the orange rinds, remove the orange peel and pour liquid into a spray bottle.  If it’s too much of a vinegar smell, add your favorite essential oil to the mix.  This is also great for cleaning your oven.  Sprinkle baking soda over your oven and spray the solution on top, wait 10 minutes and you will be amazed at how easy baked on food is removed.  Far better than toxic oven cleaner!
  • Most skin care and beauty products come in plastic packaging.  Consider a DIY version to avoid the plastic packaging.
